MHE-Demag is honoured to have been entrusted to supply and install an innovative new automatic parking system for Robinson Tower, a redeveloped commercial building located in Singapore’s central business district. The parking solution will provide 90 basement parking lots for all car types weighing up to 2600kg, and sizes up to 5.3m (L) x 2.3m (W) x 2.0m (H), distributed evenly over five basement floors.
The innovative parking system is controlled and managed by a computer system, which allows high degree of flexibility. It is capable of switching operation modes to adapt to different requirements throughout the day, whether during peak hours in the morning rush or lull periods in the afternoon.
Understanding the Technology
At the heart of this innovative automatic parking solution is the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) technology, which is tasked to carry, manoeuvre and park vehicles in randomly-determined parking lots. AGV is a mobile robot that follows markers or wires on the floor and employs vision, magnets or lasers for navigation purposes. This automatic parking solution will replace the conventional car ramp with car lift for multi-storey parking. Instead, the parking of cars at each storey will be handled by designated AGVs.
The most attractive feature of this solution is that it eliminates the need for steel supporting structures and steel parking pallets. Cars are either placed on AGV platforms during transportation or rested on support comb elements mounted onto parking floor slabs. In other words, the system does not require additional building provisions; it can simply and quickly be adapted into any conventional car park.
Reaping the Benefits
This solution inherently provides two distinctive benefits. The first is cost savings. Since a supporting steel structure is not required, this removes the need for four-hour fire proofing treatment on the steel structure. Secondly, the system offers relatively faster parking and retrieval compared to other automatic parking systems, which translates into time savings.
MHE-Demag is now working to complete system installation by the end of 2018. Once ready, drivers will only need to navigate their cars into a receiving compartment, after which the AGV will take over and take care of parking. With this, drivers will no longer have to circle the car park in search of available parking lots. This will certainly contribute to greater fuel saving and lower exhaust emissions, thereby reducing air pollution. Drivers and passengers will also enjoy greater safety as they will no longer need to walk around in the car park and risk being hit by careless drivers.
