Hans Michael Jebsen shared his thoughts on the One Belt, One Road initiative.

Chairman of Jebsen & Co Hans Michael Jebsen recently shared his insights on China’s One Belt, One Road initiative at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

He was joined by other prominent thought leaders such as Dr Vincent H.S. Lo, Chairman of both property developer Shui On Land and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, as well as university faculty members in an exchange of opinions on what the One Belt, One Road initiative means to the business world and Hong Kong.

Announced in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the One Belt, One Road initiative aims to transform the level of connectivity, cooperation and trade between a band of nations stretching from China, across Asia, and into Eastern Europe and Africa.

Mr Jebsen noted that the goal is to open up trade, which he rated positively, saying that international trade can have a powerful effect on minimising conflict between countries and poverty within them.He also called the move to promote trade, investment and cultural understanding across such a vast part of the globe as indicative of China’s willingness to take on more international responsibility. “From being a non-participant on the world stage, to entering the world stage, to being at the centre of the world stage – this is a natural progression for China,” he said.
