Visionary Leadership Recognised
Tuesday, August 01, 2017

For his visionary leadership in growing Jebsen & Jessen (SEA) from a trading business into a regional manufacturing, distribution and engineering enterprise with over 4,000 employees and leading it to become one of Asia’s first carbon-neutral industrial companies, Chairman Heinrich Jessen was named Businessman of the Year.

Heinrich Jessen, Chairman of Jebsen & Jessen (SEA), has been recognised as ‘Businessman of the Year’ at the prestigious Singapore Business Awards. The 32nd edition of the homegrown awards was held on April 25 at The Ritz-Carlton Millennia and attended by Mr Jessen and his wife, along with the Group’s Executive Board, several Singapore-based senior managers as well as Board directors.

The award is meaningful not only to Mr Jessen, as a third-generation leader of the family business, but also to the Group as a whole. Mr Jessen is the second Group representative to be acknowledged at the Singapore Business Awards, following Executive Vice Chairman Alex Chan, who was named Outstanding Manager of the Year in 1994 during his tenure as Managing Director of Hewlett Packard Singapore.

While it speaks volumes to have two recognised business leaders helming the Group, Mr Jessen highlighted in his acceptance speech the important role that the Group’s early pioneers as well as leaders and staff, past and present, have played and their collective efforts in bringing the Group to where it is today. He also shared his belief that success is not top-down, but cyclical.

He explained this during an exclusive interview with The Business Times, saying: “If a business is growing, good people are attracted to join. If good people are attracted to join, customers get better people to deal with — they’re happy, they buy more. This dynamism has come out of our willingness to invest, to push everybody to find opportunities to grow, and to be forward looking.”

The Businessman of the Year award is one of four highly coveted awards that are conferred to luminaries in the business and corporate sectors. Winners are determined by a panel of judges from the business sector, official agencies and academia. The Singapore Business Awards are jointly organised by The Business Times and logistics provider DHL and have been making waves locally since 1985.
