Our focus on creating sustainable business naturally brought consideration for the environment, health and safety (EHS) into our everyday operations. Following international developments in this area we began creating policies and standards in the early 1990s.

We have met global standards ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001 for the Group and our member companies. Newly acquired entities are required to achieve these standards after joining our family. We operate a regional surveillance and re-certification system to support our companies in maintaining standards.

Integrating concern into everyday business

To turn commitment into action we joined a new scheme for measuring and monitoring our corporate carbon footprint and are working towards carbon neutrality. A designated team member drives multiple internal initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible.

For our member companies, the results of making EHS an everyday activity are evidenced in the multiple awards. Across South East Asia suppliers and customers recognise our Regional Business Units for their environmental impact and health and safety excellence.

The impact of our investment

As well as time and attention a systematic EHS commitment takes resources. The positive impact on customers, staff and the wider community becomes evident in the valued relationships. We continue to serve clients and customers who require low impact goods and services, for example those in the packaging and oleo chemical industries.
Our record for safety makes us a prudent choice for industrial partners and clients. Strong EHS standards contribute to our excellent record of staff and customer loyalty.
Our relationship with our community is strengthened through Meet a Need Programme, an annual CSR initiative focused on communities across the region. We partner with local charities to deliver meaningful and impactful projects, engaging our staff and providing lasting value for the community.

Our EHS principles

All our member companies use the following principles as a basis for EHS management throughout their organisations.
Make EHS a corporate priority
This means integrating EHS considerations into corporate strategy, including decisions on activities, siting and operations. It also means establishing both policies, programmes and practices for conducting operations in a manner that is environmentally sound and that protects the health and safety of our people and the public. Most importantly it means turning decisions into action by providing the financial and human resources needed to implement policy.
Move forward by setting goals and measuring performance
With the commitment made and the resources allocated we need to look to the future, evolving ways to innovate and improve EHS performance by setting objectives and targets
Raise the standard through education
Our people carry out our activities. With the right education, training and motivation they can minimise the negative EHS impact we have as a Group.
Make consideration for EHS impact part of product and service development
We will develop products and services that have no undue environmental impact and are safe in their production, transport, storage, intended use and disposal. They will be efficient in their consumption of energy and natural resources and they will be easily recycled, reused or disposed of safely.
Create facilities and operations that maximise impact
We work to minimise the impact of operations on people and the environment by implementing best management practices, including pollution prevention and resource productivity.
Be ready for emergencies
We will be prepared for addressing emergencies. Responsiveness will ensure we learn and change practices when any accident or near-miss happens.
Share advice with stakeholders
We advise and, where relevant, educate customers, distributors and the public in the safe use, transportation, storage and disposal of our products and services. EHS criteria are used in our procurement decisions.
Be part of the bigger dialogue
We will increase the awareness of and commitment to responsible EHS behaviour by actively participating in dialogues amongst industry, government and non-profit organisations in our community.
Watch and monitor ourselves
We regularly measure and audit EHS performance to check we are compliant with legal requirements and that we fulfil our stated policy commitments.
